Poland is one of Europe's most unexpected wine countries — and one of its fastest-growing. Vines have been cultivated here since the Middle Ages, but the modern industry is a recent revival: the country now counts several hundred commercial wineries, most of them small, family-run estates founded in the last two decades as a warming climate made ripening more reliable.

Two areas lead. In the west, Zielona Góra, in the Lubuskie region near the German border, is the historic heart of Polish wine and hosts the country's largest wine festival, the Winobranie, each September; neighboring Lower Silesia has Poland's mildest climate and is planting Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. To the south, around Kraków, Małopolska strings boutique vineyards along a signposted wine route. Cool-climate hybrids — Solaris, Rondo, Regent and Seyval Blanc — still dominate, alongside a growing amount of Riesling.

For travelers, Kraków makes the easiest base for the southern vineyards, while Zielona Góra anchors the west. It is very much a discovery destination: tastings are personal, prices are fair, and the wines change quickly from one vintage to the next. Harvest falls in autumn, as it does across northern Europe.

Wineries to Visit in Poland

Poland’s scene is young and personal — most estates are small and family-run, and a visit means meeting the winemaker. A few that welcome visitors for tours and tastings:

  • Winnica Turnau (Baniewice, West Pomerania) — one of Poland’s most awarded producers, offering a three-hour tour that pairs a vineyard walk and cellar visit with a six-wine tasting and regional cheeses, plus an on-site guest house.
  • Winnica Srebrna Góra (Kraków, Bielany) — around 28 hectares on south-facing slopes below the Camaldolese monastery, one of the country’s largest vineyards, with vineyard visits and tastings in its enotourism pavilion.
  • Winnica Jakubów (Lower Silesia) — a Dalkowskie Hills estate established in 2002, offering tours, tastings and guest rooms (book directly).
