Information We Collect

Information you provide to us. When you register for an account, subscribe to our newsletter, fill out a form, post content, or contact us, we collect the information you give us — such as your name, email address, password, and the contents of your messages and submissions. This includes communications between you and Winetraveler, such as account-verification, support, and service messages.

Information we collect automatically. When you use the Services, our servers and our providers automatically collect certain information, including your Internet Protocol (IP) address, device and browser type, operating system, referring and exit pages and URLs, the pages and links you view and click, approximate location derived from your IP address, and the dates and times of your requests. We may collect similar information from emails we send, such as open and click rates. We collect this information using cookies and similar technologies (see below).

Information from third parties. We may receive information about you from analytics providers, advertising partners, and platforms you use to interact with us (for example, if you engage with us through a social or booking platform), and we may combine it with information we already have.

Cookies and Similar Technologies

We and our partners use cookies and similar technologies such as pixels, web beacons, tags, and local storage to operate and secure the Services, remember your preferences and login, understand how the Services are used, and deliver and measure advertising. First-party cookies are set by Winetraveler; third-party cookies are set by our partners (for example, analytics and advertising providers).

Most browsers let you block or delete cookies and clear your cache through their settings; the “help” menu of your browser explains how. Rejecting cookies may prevent some features from working properly, and you may still see non-personalized advertising. For advertising choices, see the “Advertising and Analytics” section below.

How We Use Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide, operate, maintain, and secure the Services, and authenticate and remember you when you log in;
  • Personalize your experience and provide relevant content, recommendations, features, and advertising;
  • Communicate with you, including about your account, updates, support requests, and (where permitted) newsletters and marketing;
  • Understand and analyze usage and trends, and test, develop, and improve the Services;
  • Detect, prevent, and address fraud, abuse, security incidents, and technical issues; and
  • Comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms of Service.

If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, we rely on the following legal bases to process your information: performance of a contract with you; our legitimate interests in operating and improving the Services and securing them against abuse; your consent (for example, for certain cookies and marketing, which you can withdraw at any time); and compliance with legal obligations.

How We Share Information

We do not sell your personal information for money. We share information only as described here:

  • Service providers. With vendors who perform services for us — such as hosting, analytics, email delivery, customer support, and security — and who are permitted to use the information only to provide those services to us.
  • Advertising and analytics partners. With advertising and analytics providers, including Mediavine and Google, who use cookies and similar technologies to deliver and measure advertising and to analyze usage, as described below.
  • Affiliate and booking partners. When you click affiliate links or book third-party tours or experiences, the applicable partner (for example, Viator or the TripAdvisor/Rakuten network) may receive information such as that a referral came from Winetraveler; your booking itself is handled under that partner’s own privacy policy.
  • Legal and safety. When we believe it is necessary to comply with law or legal process, enforce our Terms, or protect the rights, property, or safety of Winetraveler, our users, or others.
  • Business transfers. In connection with a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of assets, in which case information may be transferred as a business asset (subject to this Privacy Policy).
  • With your consent or at your direction.

Note that some advertising involves the use of cookies and identifiers to deliver interest-based ads, which may be considered a “sale” or “sharing” of personal information under certain U.S. state privacy laws. See “Your Privacy Rights and Choices” for how to opt out. We will not share information gathered from a user’s Google Contacts connection with any other user or third party, and we do not save or store Google Contacts search results.

Advertising and Analytics

We use third-party analytics tools, such as Google Analytics, to measure traffic and usage trends and understand high-level demographics. This information is aggregated and is not used to identify any individual user. You can learn about Google’s practices and opt out of Google Analytics at Google’s partner-sites page and via the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.

Mediavine Programmatic Advertising (Ver 1.1)

The Website works with Mediavine to manage third-party interest-based advertising appearing on the Website. Mediavine serves content and advertisements when you visit the Website, which may use first and third-party cookies. A cookie is a small text file which is sent to your computer or mobile device (referred to in this policy as a “device”) by the web server so that a website can remember some information about your browsing activity on the Website.

First party cookies are created by the website that you are visiting. A third-party cookie is frequently used in behavioral advertising and analytics and is created by a domain other than the website you are visiting. Third-party cookies, tags, pixels, beacons and other similar technologies (collectively, “Tags”) may be placed on the Website to monitor interaction with advertising content and to target and optimize advertising. Each internet browser has functionality so that you can block both first and third-party cookies and clear your browser’s cache. The “help” feature of the menu bar on most browsers will tell you how to stop accepting new cookies, how to receive notification of new cookies, how to disable existing cookies and how to clear your browser’s cache. For more information about cookies and how to disable them, you can consult the information at All About Cookies.

Without cookies you may not be able to take full advantage of the Website content and features. Please note that rejecting cookies does not mean that you will no longer see ads when you visit our Site. In the event you opt-out, you will still see non-personalized advertisements on the Website.

The Website collects the following data using a cookie when serving personalized ads:

  • IP Address
  • Operating System type
  • Operating System version
  • Device Type
  • Language of the website
  • Web browser type
  • Email (in hashed form)

Mediavine Partners (companies listed below with whom Mediavine shares data) may also use this data to link to other end user information the partner has independently collected to deliver targeted advertisements. Mediavine Partners may also separately collect data about end users from other sources, such as advertising IDs or pixels, and link that data to data collected from Mediavine publishers in order to provide interest-based advertising across your online experience, including devices, browsers and apps. This data includes usage data, cookie information, device information, information about interactions between users and advertisements and websites, geolocation data, traffic data, and information about a visitor’s referral source to a particular website. Mediavine Partners may also create unique IDs to create audience segments, which are used to provide targeted advertising.

If you would like more information about this practice and to know your choices to opt-in or opt-out of this data collection, please visit National Advertising Initiative opt out page. You may also visit Digital Advertising Alliance website and Network Advertising Initiative website to learn more information about interest-based advertising. You may download the AppChoices app at Digital Advertising Alliance’s AppChoices app to opt out in connection with mobile apps, or use the platform controls on your mobile device to opt out.

For specific information about Mediavine Partners, the data each collects and their data collection and privacy policies, please visit Mediavine Partners.

Your Privacy Rights and Choices

You can update your account information at any time or ask us to delete your data by emailing support@winetraveler.com. You can unsubscribe from marketing emails using the link in any such email, and you can control cookies and interest-based advertising as described above.

EEA and UK residents (GDPR)

If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you have the right to access, correct, update, or delete your personal information; to restrict or object to our processing; to data portability; and to withdraw consent where we rely on it. You may also lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority. To exercise these rights, contact us at privacy@winetraveler.com.

California residents (CCPA/CPRA)

If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information we collect, use, and disclose; to request access to or deletion of your personal information; to correct inaccurate information; and to opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of personal information (which, under California law, can include the use of cookies for cross-context behavioral advertising). We will not discriminate against you for exercising these rights. To opt out of interest-based advertising, use the advertising controls described above; to make any other request, contact us at privacy@winetraveler.com. We will verify your request as required by law, and you may use an authorized agent.

Data Retention

We keep personal information for as long as needed to provide the Services, maintain your account, comply with our legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements. When information is no longer needed, we take reasonable steps to delete or de-identify it. If you ask us to delete your account, we will delete or de-identify your personal information except where we are required or permitted to retain it.

Data Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures designed to protect personal information against loss, misuse, and unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, and destruction. However, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. You are responsible for keeping your password confidential.

International Data Transfers

Winetraveler is based in the United States, and we process and store information in the United States and other countries where we or our providers operate. If you access the Services from outside the United States, you understand that your information may be transferred to and processed in the United States, where data-protection laws may differ from those in your country.

Children’s Privacy

Protecting the privacy of the very young is important to us. For that reason, we do not collect or maintain information at our properties from those we know to be under 21 years of age, as is compliant with United States law, and no part of our site is structured to attract anyone under 21. Our website discusses alcohol consumption in a responsible way and is not geared to attract individuals within the United States who are not of legal drinking age. If you believe we may have collected information from someone under 21, please contact us at privacy@winetraveler.com so we can remove it.

External Websites

The Services contain links to other websites that we do not operate or control. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites. We encourage you to read the privacy policy of every website you visit that may collect information about you. This Privacy Policy applies solely to information collected by Winetraveler.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will take reasonable steps to notify you, such as by posting a notice on the Services or updating the date at the top of this page. Your continued use of the Services after changes take effect constitutes your acceptance of the updated Privacy Policy.

Contact Us

If you have any questions or concerns about this Privacy Policy or our data practices, please contact us at privacy@winetraveler.com. For data-deletion requests, email support@winetraveler.com.
