About this winery

D’Araprì began its history from an idea of three: friends, Girolamo d’Amico, Louis Rapini and Ulrico Priore, who were sharing their interest in jazz music and common passion for wine and Tavoliere’s native vines. This is how in the 1979, the popular and renowned production of traditional method sparkling wines “d’Araprì”, started its own adventure.

The name D'Araprì is given by the first letters of the three slastnames read in sequence. D’Arapri born from the belief that producing quality sparkling wine in the South of italy is possible, and from the intuition that the charachter of the native grape “Bombino bianco," can be valorized in "bubble" style. D’Arapri estate evolved thanks to the founder’s business skills and the extraordinary attachment to the values of their own territory.

The wine house is located in an old cellar of the 8th Century A.D. in the historic center of San Severo in Foggia County . In this historical structure, in its underground maze under the city, the bottles complete its second fermentation cycle, and they age on yeast.

The cellar underground spans about 1,000 square meters under the city center near St. Nicholas Church, one of the oldest churches in the city. The cellar underground dates back to 1600 and extends under some of the historical palaces of San Severo. It is possible to notice evidence of the past, such as remains of ancient city walls of 1200, an old press of the 1836 and the prison of Carbonari Morelli and Silvati.

In this historical place thousands and thousands of bottles age for at least two years in the cool and dark underground, before being ready to see the light and be packaged. Since 2002, a beautiful ancient oil mill, has been restored to former glory. This restoration allows seeing the construction phases ranging from the Middle Ages to the eighteenth century. The majestic beauty of this old mill fascinates all visitors of the d’Araprì cellar. This building is protected by the FAI (Italian Environment Fund), and beside attracting wine tourists, it is the location of cultural events, such as music festivals, art exhibitions, and cultural meetings."
