Tipping at the cellar door, what's normal where you've been?
This trips me up every trip because it's so different by country.
- US: tasting fees are common, often waived with a purchase, and a tip for a great host feels expected.
- Italy/France: usually no tip culture at the cantina, but buying a bottle or two is the polite thank-you.
- Elsewhere I genuinely don't know.
How do you handle it? Do you tip a winemaker who spends an hour with you, or is buying wine the tip? Curious how travelers from different places see this.
In the US I tip a host who really spends time with us, especially if the fee's waived on purchase. In Europe I've settled on 'buy a bottle or two' as the thank-you and nobody's ever expected more.
