About Concannon Vineyard
Concannon Vineyard was founded on Tesla Road in 1883 by James Concannon, an Irish immigrant, and it has stayed in the Livermore Valley ever since. Its place in California wine history rests on two things: it was the first winery in America to bottle Petite Sirah as a named varietal wine, from the 1961 vintage, and the Concannon Cabernet Sauvignon clones selected from its vineyard are among the most widely planted in the state.
Petite Sirah is still the signature, alongside Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, and the historic estate with its lawns and picnic grounds is one of the most relaxed places in the valley to spend an afternoon.
Visiting
Concannon is about 50 minutes from San Francisco via Interstate 580 and is open for tastings most days, with reservations advised at weekends. Picnics are welcome on the grounds, and the tasting room pours flights that trace the history of the estate.
