Piedmont sits in Italy's northwest corner, up against the Alps, and makes some of the country's most serious and long-lived reds. Its flagship grape is Nebbiolo, behind Barolo and Barbaresco — powerful, tannic, perfumed wines from the hills of the Langhe that rank among the world's great age-worthy reds. The name is often traced to nebbia, the autumn fog that settles over the vineyards.

Nebbiolo gets the attention, but everyday Piedmont runs on Barbera and Dolcetto — softer, fruitier reds for the table. Whites include the aromatic, lightly sparkling Moscato d'Asti and the crisper Gavi. The vineyard landscapes of the Langhe, Roero and Monferrato are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The town of Alba is the regional hub, and the center of the white truffle trade that peaks in autumn alongside the harvest. Barolo, Barbaresco and the surrounding villages are small and walkable, and the region pairs its wines with some of Italy's best food.

Best time to visit Piedmont

The Langhe-Roero and Monferrato vineyard landscape was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014. Autumn is the season to visit: harvest and the fog (nebbia) that gives Nebbiolo its name coincide with the Alba International White Truffle Fair, which runs from October into early December. Base yourself in Alba, the hub for both Barolo and Barbaresco.

The shoulder months either side of summer — and the Sep–Oct harvest — are ideal: active cellars, good weather, thinner crowds. High summer is busiest.

Best Wineries to Visit in Piedmont (2026)

Piedmont’s great estates cluster in the Langhe hills around Alba, in and near the villages of Barolo and Barbaresco (visits are by reservation):

  • Marchesi di Barolo (Barolo) — one of the oldest Barolo houses, with historic cellars in the village and guided tastings by appointment.
  • Ceretto (Alba) — an organic/biodynamic producer whose glass-domed “L’Acino” tasting platform juts into the vineyard, pouring a Nebbiolo flight from Alba to Barbaresco to Barolo.
  • Fontanafredda (Serralunga d’Alba) — an estate founded 1858 with ~120 hectares of organic vineyards and guided tours of its historic cellars.
