Domaine Economou is eastern Crete's cult name, tucked away at Ziros in the hills above Sitia. Yiannis Economou trained in Alba and worked at Chateau Margaux before coming home in 1994 to make wine from old Liatiko vines that average around ninety years, using a rare small-berried clone.
He releases the wines only when he judges them ready, often ten to fifteen years after harvest. There is no website and no signage, and visits are strictly by advance appointment through the wine trade, so this is one to seek out on purpose rather than drop in on.
A working cellar rather than a visitor operation. There is no website and no signage.
