Founded in 1990 by a group including British wine writer Hugh Johnson, Royal Tokaji was a pioneer in reviving Hungary’s legendary wine culture after the communist era. The estate holds classified first- and second-growth vineyard sites in Mád, producing benchmark Tokaji Aszú wines that rank among the world’s greatest sweet whites. The atmospheric cellar, carved deep into volcanic tuff, offers guided tastings that trace both the winery’s history and the ancient craft of botrytised winemaking in the Tokaj UNESCO World Heritage region.
