About Doniene Gorrondona

Founded in 1996 when three partners took over the Gorrondona farmhouse (the building dates from 1852) and replanted abandoned vineyards to bring Bakio back as a wine village. The 1.5 hour tour walks the vineyard, winery and on-site distillery and ends with two txakolis tasted alongside anchovies, Idiazabal cheese and Iberian ham; a few minutes' drive from San Juan de Gaztelugatxe.

Visitors single out owner-led tours, native grapes, sea-breeze whites. The wines to look for are Hondarrabi Zuri. The estate dates from 1996.

Visiting

Book ahead. The Txorierri wineries (Lezama, Zamudio, Larrabetzu) are 15 to 20 minutes from downtown Bilbao and a few minutes from the airport; Bakio is about 35 to 40 minutes on the coast road and Gernika/Muxika about 40 to 45 minutes.
