Best East Coast Winery Hotels and Resorts: Where to Stay on the Vineyard

There is a particular pleasure in waking up on a vineyard: coffee on a balcony over the vines, a walk between the rows before the tasting room opens, and no designated driver to negotiate because your bed is a hundred yards from the cellar. The West Coast gets most of the attention for this kind of trip, but the East Coast has quietly built a strong bench of winery hotels, inns and cottages where you sleep on the property that made the wine. Every property here is a working winery with lodging on the same estate, not a hotel that happens to be near wine country. Why Stay at a Winery on the East Coast

East Coast wine country is closer than most people think. The Finger Lakes are a five-hour drive from New York City, the North Fork is two, Virginia’s best estates sit an hour from Charlottesville and two from Washington, and the North Georgia mountains are ninety minutes from Atlanta. What the regions lack in scale they make up for in intimacy: most of the properties below have between two and thirty rooms, breakfast is often made by someone who also works the harvest, and the tasting room stays open to you after the day visitors have gone. Staying on the estate also solves the practical problem of every wine trip, which is who drives home. Riesling in the Finger Lakes, Merlot and Cabernet Franc on Long Island, Viognier and Petit Verdot in Virginia, Chardonnay and Cabernet in the Yadkin Valley: the wine is better than its reputation, and it tastes best where it was grown.

Finger Lakes, New York

The Finger Lakes are the East Coast’s most complete wine region, with more than 140 wineries around Seneca, Cayuga and Keuka lakes and a cool-climate Riesling that stands with the best in the world. Belhurst Castle & Winery, Geneva

Belhurst is the one to book if you want the story. The red-stone castle on the western shore of Seneca Lake was built between 1885 and 1889 for Carrie Harron Collins, a New York socialite, ran as a speakeasy and casino under Red Dwyer from the 1930s, and became a hotel after 1975. Today it is a winery, a hotel and a wedding venue in one, on the National Register of Historic Places. The Chambers in the Castle are the eleven original rooms, some with turrets and lake views, and the attached Vinifera Inn adds twenty larger rooms with king beds, whirlpool tubs and fireplaces. The tasting room looks over the lake, Edgar’s restaurant serves dinner in the castle, and there is a spa on site. Castle guests also get the complimentary wine spigot on the second floor, which is exactly what it sounds like.

The Inn at Glenora Wine Cellars, Dundee

Glenora was founded in 1977 as the first winery on Seneca Lake, and its inn is the most purpose-built vineyard hotel in the region. All thirty rooms have a private balcony or patio looking down over the vines to the lake, the top rooms add a whirlpool and fireplace, and a two-bedroom cottage sits right in the vineyard for longer stays. Veraisons, the restaurant, cooks from local farms and has a covered lake-view terrace. It is about ten minutes north of Watkins Glen and an easy base for the west side of the lake.

The Inn at Miles Wine Cellars, Himrod

At the other end of the scale, Miles Wine Cellars offers two rooms in a Greek Revival mansion on the lakeshore, with a tasting room and wine shop downstairs and a boathouse and dock on Seneca Lake for anyone arriving by water. The Miles family has farmed here since the early 1980s, the house has a well-known ghost story that the winery turned into its silk-screened “Ghost” white blend, and the setting, which National Geographic Traveler called the most serenely gorgeous of any winery in the region, is the whole point. Long Island and the North Fork

The North Fork is New York’s maritime wine country, a narrow strip of farmland between Long Island Sound and Peconic Bay where Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc ripen in sea air. It is two hours from Manhattan, which makes a vineyard stay here the easiest wine weekend on this list. Most of the region’s fifty-odd wineries do not have rooms, so the two that do fill quickly. Sannino Vineyard Bed & Breakfast, Cutchogue

Sannino is a family vineyard with a Tuscan accent, and its bed and breakfast is the stay with the most vineyard around it on the island. The 800-square-foot Tuscan Suite has a private entrance, a balcony over the vines and a marble bath, and three newer king rooms share a lounge. The stay is adults only, breakfast is cooked by the family and delivered to the suite, and a complimentary tasting with a cheese platter for two is included, reached by walking paths through the vineyard to the tasting house. Rose Hill Vineyards & Inn, Mattituck

Long known as Shinn Estate, this Mattituck property was bought by the Frankel family in 2017 and renamed in 2021, and its restored nineteenth-century farmhouse inn sits steps from the tasting room with the vines around it. The estate farms sustainably, breakfast is a chef’s choice delivered to your room, and a tasting with a cheese board is part of the stay. It is the quieter of the two North Fork options and a short drive from the restaurants of Greenport. Book direct through the winery.

Virginia

Virginia has more than 300 wineries and the deepest bench of vineyard lodging on the East Coast, most of it in the Monticello region around Charlottesville, where the Blue Ridge foothills grow Viognier, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot that have earned real respect. The 1804 Inn & Cottages at Barboursville Vineyards

Barboursville is Virginia’s most storied estate, home of the Octagon red and the ruins of the Barbour mansion that Thomas Jefferson designed for his friend Governor James Barbour. The lodging is spread across the estate: three suites in the 1804 Inn, a Georgian villa that predates the mansion by a generation; the eighteenth-century Vineyard Cottage, one of the oldest dwellings in the area in continuous use; and the Sangiovese and Blue Run cottages. A full breakfast and wine on arrival are included, the Library 1821 tasting room is a short walk, and Palladio, the estate’s northern Italian restaurant, is the best dinner in the county. The Farmhouse at Veritas, Afton

The Farmhouse sits on Veritas Vineyard and Winery in the Blue Ridge foothills near Rockfish Gap, in a house built around 1836 with six guest rooms. The draw beyond the setting is the table: a four-course wine-paired dinner is served Tuesday through Saturday at a single evening seating, breakfast comes from the farm, and the Veritas tasting room is on the same property. It is one of the most complete winery stays in the state.

The Inn at Stinson Vineyards, Crozet

Stinson is a small, French-leaning family winery west of Charlottesville, and its inn has four king suites set among the vines with the Blue Ridge across the fields. Two of the suites have fireplaces and private decks, there is a seasonal saltwater pool from May through August, and a pastry breakfast from a local bakery is left for you each morning. The inn is adults only unless you book the whole house, and the tasting room is next door.

Wedmore Place at The Williamsburg Winery

For a winery stay that pairs with Colonial Williamsburg, Wedmore Place has twenty-eight rooms on the Williamsburg Winery‘s Wessex Hundred farm, each themed to a European province and most with a wood-burning fireplace. Continental breakfast and a wine tasting for two are included, and the winery, one of Virginia’s largest, is a walk across the grounds.

Also in Virginia: Prince Michel Vineyard in Leon, on the road between Charlottesville and Culpeper, has four French-provincial suites with fireplaces on the winery property, and Sharp Rock Vineyards in Sperryville rents a cottage and a carriage house on a 23-acre farm with a swimming hole on the Hughes River, with a tasting and a bottle included. North Carolina and the Yadkin Valley

North Carolina’s wine map has two poles: the Yadkin Valley in the Piedmont, where Chardonnay, Cabernet and Italian varieties grow on rolling farmland, and the High Country and Asheville in the mountains. Biltmore Estate, Asheville

George Vanderbilt’s 8,000-acre estate is the grandest winery stay in America, and it comes in two versions. The Inn on Biltmore Estate, opened in 2001, has 210 rooms and suites, a spa, a library lounge and a Forbes Four-Star dining room, with a shuttle to the winery every half hour. The Village Hotel on Biltmore Estate is the more casual option, a few steps from Biltmore Winery in Antler Hill Village, with a pool and its own restaurants. Either way your stay includes admission to the estate and Biltmore House, and the winery tasting is complimentary with it. Asheville’s restaurants and breweries are ten minutes away, and the three-vineyard half-day tour from Asheville covers the mountain wineries beyond the estate.

Banner Elk Winery & Villa

Founded in 2005 as the first commercial winery in Avery and Watauga counties, Banner Elk farms at 4,800 feet in the High Country, near the ski slopes of Sugar and Beech mountains. The Tuscan-style villa has eight suites with private whirlpool tubs, set among the vines and a blueberry orchard that gives the winery its signature blueberry wine, and the whole villa can be rented for a group. It is the mountain option on this list, and the coolest in summer.

Elkin Creek Vineyard Cabins, Elkin

Elkin Creek is the Yadkin Valley stay for people who want a creek and a fireplace rather than a lobby. Four cabins sit along the creek with full kitchens, stone fireplaces, soaking tubs and porch swings, a short walk from the winery, a historic mill and a small waterfall. The winery lists its rates plainly, at $149 a night Sunday to Thursday and $169 on Friday and Saturday with a two-night minimum, and the tasting room opens Thursday through Sunday. Also in the Yadkin Valley: Shelton Vineyards in Dobson, founded in 1999 and the largest family-owned estate winery in the state, has a Hampton Inn & Suites on its grounds with a lobby wine bar pouring the estate wines. It is a branded hotel rather than an inn, and the tasting room and Harvest Grill are a short drive across the property, but it is the practical base for a Yadkin Valley weekend.

New England and the Mid-Atlantic

The Langworthy Inn & Winery, Westerly, Rhode Island

A mansion built around 1875 on the site of colonial governor Samuel Ward’s home, the Langworthy Inn has seven rooms including three suites, a winery tasting room on the property, and ocean views from some rooms, with Misquamicut beach and Watch Hill a few minutes away. It is the one place in New England where you can walk from a tasting to the Atlantic.

Snow Farm Vineyard, South Hero, Vermont

Snow Farm grows cold-hardy and French-hybrid grapes on the Lake Champlain islands, and it runs a historic inn on the lakeshore a short walk from the vineyard and tasting room. Details are sparse online and the inn books by phone, so call ahead; the reward is a winery stay on one of the prettiest lakes in New England.

Maryland and Pennsylvania Farm Stays

On Maryland’s Eastern Shore, Crow Vineyard & Winery in Kennedyville runs a farmstay bed and breakfast in a renovated 1847 farmhouse on a 365-acre working cattle farm, with a pool, a hearty breakfast and the estate tasting room on the property. Near Frederick, the Inn at Springfield Manor has eight suites in a manor house dating to 1774 on a 135-acre estate that combines a winery, a distillery, a brewery and Maryland’s largest lavender field. Georgia and the Southeast

North Georgia’s wine country runs through the mountains around Dahlonega, ninety minutes north of Atlanta, and it has embraced the vineyard villa more than any other East Coast region. Château Élan Winery & Resort, Braselton

Château Élan was built by Donald and Nancy Panoz in 1981 in the style of a French château, and it remains the biggest winery resort in the East: hotel rooms and suites in the inn, private spa suites, two- and three-bedroom villas with kitchens, a full spa, forty-five holes of golf, tennis and several restaurants, all on an estate with the winery at its center. Tastings and tours run daily, and the resort is forty minutes from Atlanta’s northern suburbs, which makes it the easiest winery stay in the South to reach.

Montaluce Winery & Estates, Dahlonega

Montaluce is a Tuscan-inspired estate of more than 400 acres above the Etowah River, with a winery, the Le Vigne restaurant and four privately owned villas that rent to guests: three three-bedroom houses that sleep six and one five-bedroom villa that sleeps ten, all overlooking the vines, with a two-night minimum. The winery lists nightly rates from about $350 to $575 depending on the villa, plus lodging tax. Also around Dahlonega: Yonah Mountain Vineyards in Cleveland rents three four-bedroom cottages with access to the tasting room and Georgia’s only known wine cave, and Cavender Creek Vineyards has four units on the property including a hand-hewn log cabin from around 1820. Note that the Dahlonega Resort & Vineyard, despite the name, does not have a vineyard or winery on its grounds; its wines come from a sister property a mile away.

How to Choose (and Book) a Vineyard Stay

Match the stay to the trip. Belhurst, Biltmore and Château Élan are full resorts with restaurants and spas, good for a celebration or a group that wants everything on site. The inns at Glenora, Veritas, Stinson and the 1804 Inn are for couples who want the vineyard and a serious dinner. The cabins at Elkin Creek and Buttonwood Grove, and the villas at Montaluce, suit families and friends who want a kitchen and a fire pit.

Book early for harvest and fall color. September and October are the most beautiful months in every one of these regions and the tightest for rooms; most of the small inns have fewer than ten. Spring is quieter and often cheaper, and winter in the Finger Lakes and the High Country has its own appeal if you like a fireplace.

Several of these inns are adults only, most have two-night minimums on weekends, and a few, like Miles Wine Cellars and Snow Farm, book by phone or direct rather than through hotel sites.
