Stellenbosch is South Africa’s most celebrated wine district, a valley of granite-soiled mountain slopes in the Cape Winelands about 50 km east of Cape Town, renowned for Cabernet Sauvignon, Bordeaux-style red blends and Pinotage. Anchored by a 340-year-old university town, it launched South Africa’s first organized wine route in 1971 and remains the country’s largest and most active.
Founded in 1679, Stellenbosch is South Africa’s second-oldest town, and home to the country’s primary viticulture and oenology school — the birthplace of Pinotage.
