About Adega Regional de Colares
The cooperative cellar of the tiny Colares DOC, built around huge old oak casks and vines that were never grafted onto American rootstock, since the sandy coastal soil kept phylloxera out. Guides walk visitors through both the history and the tasting.
Visitors single out old oak cellar, ungrafted ramisco vines, deep regional history. The wines to look for are Ramisco.
Visiting
Book ahead. Colares is about 40 minutes west via Sintra, Bucelas about 30 minutes north, and Alenquer or Torres Vedras 45 minutes to an hour northwest, so this cluster is really three separate short trips rather than one loop.
